La Siria secondo gli Usa

In una lunga intervista alla giornalista di Abc Christiane Amanpour, l'Ambasciatore americano a Damasco Ford, che di recente è stato ad Hama, una delle città siriane più colpite dalla repressione del regime siriano.

La visita di Ford ad Hama ha innervosito non poco il regime, ma l'ambasciatore dice di non preoccuparsi troppo, che lo rifarebbe domani, perché ha considerato naturale esprimere solidarietà ai "manifestanti pacifici" della città. La Amanpour chiede a questo punto quale sia la strategia Usa, vista la evidente simpatia che il governo americano mostra per i manifestanti, sia nei toni che nei media scelti per comunicare.

In una recente audizione in Parlamento Ford aveva rivendicato la sua scelta di stare con i manifestanti.

Ford non ha accettato di parlare alla tv di Stato siriana. "The Syrian television operated by the state, operated by the dictatorship, is not credible and tells all kinds of lies. So we are looking for ways to reach out to the Syrian public through social media, through things like Facebook, and by going out and about in the country".

E ancora: "The Syrian Government does not tell the truth. They said there were armed gangs in Hama. Well, the only weapon I saw was a slingshot. So it’s important to bear witness and it’s important to relay a message of support". Alla domanda se gli Usa vogliono che Assad lasci, erisponde che Assad ha perso "legittimità", ma che in ultima istanza non conta tanto quel che dice la comunità internazionale ma quello che dicono i siriani. I siriani vorranno una transizione democratica e la caduta del regime, dice la giornalista. Ma il fatto è che se Obama ha chiesto a Mubarak di lasciare, non lo ha chiesto ancora ad Assad. Dovrebbe farlo? "Well, you’re absolutely right that Bashar al-Asad is using a great deal more violence than was used in Egypt. We have said – and we’ve been very clear on this – we do not view Bashar al-Asad as indispensible. We do not view his continuation in power as important to American interests. We have said we view him and his government as the source of instability and the source of violence in Syria. I think our views are very clear. The President has said his government will be left in the past. The meaning is clear, Christiane".
